Standing on the Edge of the World
Some people call California the "edge of history," a confluence of innovators and adventurers who congregated on America's last frontier in the middle of the 19th century, and that spirit lives on in those who live there today. Today we headed out to Pt. Reyes National Seashore north of San Francisco and saw the Edge of the World, where America stops and the Pacific Ocean begins. We parked the car at the lot at the end of the road and walked the half mile to the light station that was built in the 19th century to help avoid shipping accidents on the hazardous rocks below the point. Once there, there's a set of 308 stairs down an incline to the light station itself, standing alone at the edge of the world.
We walked to the bottom of the stairs, and stared out over the Pacific, and that's where I asked Tiffany to marry me, because there wasn't anyone else I'd rather stand at the edge of the world with. She said yes, and put on the ring, and we headed back up the 308 stairs to the top of the hill.
And that's the story about how two people stood at the edge of the world and the edge of history, and decided that the world wouldn't be complete without the other.
