Sic Transit Gloria Mundi
Guinness was a good cat.
He was faithful and brave, a hunter and a friend, a wonderful companion.
Guinness was found in Northwest DC, all alone and shivering, fending off two dogs on the morning of May 17th, 2004. Our friend Seth found him, scooped him up and put him in a small woolen hat and brought him to the office. Lisa emailed me that day and asked if I knew anyone interested in fostering a kitten, and I said I'd come take a look.
It was all over from that moment. This little kitten just mewed at me and I was sold. He was tiny, less than a pound, and his giant head dwarfed his tiny body. He moved tenatively, then quickly. He was a silent one, never meowing, just looking up and purring. He had this purr that seemed bigger than he was, and it was something he'd grow into in the time I knew him.
Except, his purr was bigger than he was, all his life. It had this incredible resonance, it infused whatever he was lying on, making the floor shake a little, or your chest. He spent a lot of time curled up on my chest while I sat in my chair, purring and cuddling up to me. Truly, he was his father's cat.
He died this afternoon at four past four of complications of liver failure.
He was truly the best of cats.
Rest in Peace, Guinness, and may God be between you and I while we are apart from one another.

Aw, man, Tom. I'm so sorry. To hear abour your reunion, only to be so soon again parted, is heartbreaking. Perhaps he knew he wasn't well and came home to see you again one last time.
